The Wheelie-ing Elvi

The Wheelie-ing Elvi Sponsored By WWW.HONDATRAIL70.COM

The Wheelie-ing Elvi were started by two buddies of mine, Craig Knight and
Chris Watson, in 1995. Actually, the first year, Craig and Chris rode in a
neighborhood July 4th parade in a Marilyn Monroe wig and a Mexican sombrero.
Not exactly Elvis stuff! The next year, 1996, the Elvis idea came to them,
the group expanded to five, and the rest is history, so they say....  It is
a funny group, that seems to be expanding all of the time (contracting too).
The initial group, me included (I joined in 1997), all know each other

through bicycle racing, we all have been involved in that, but the first
five have all raced motorcross together, and there is a rugby connection and
old high school buddy connection with some of them as well. All are
gearheads of the highest order, most have some cool hotrod, sports car,
racing car, or motorcycle tucked away. I don't think we have a single Elvi
with just one Mini Trail. Two of the Elvi are extremely accomplished amature
machinists (not their professions) and have shops where major surgery can be
done. We never resort to proper motorcycle shops for service, and paint our
own bikes, a few of which are drop dead show quality. The professions are
wide-ranging, with a therapist, bicycle industry rep, aerospace industry
manager, three newspaper photographers, two lawyers, a security expert,

teacher, soft drink bottling company owner, carbon fiber fabrication company
owner, and a student as members. Two of these, Brad Sawyer and Chris Watson,
are past and current national motorsport champions on motorcycles and racing
cars. Our wives have even ridden with us as the "Chicklets". We have ridden
in all of the July 4th parades around here, our first love, but demand has

broadened our schedule to include the annual Parade of Lights in Fort Worth
(over 100,000 people each year)( we were the judge's favorite pick this last
weekend). We have ridden in the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas, Mardi Gras
parade in Austin, Texas, appeared with the Fort Worth Symphony at their
summer Concerts in the Garden, at Texas Christian University's (TCU) Frog
Alley, in Fort Worth's annual RetroFest, Alcon Labs "Light Up The Night",
and at a fundraiser for the Dallas Ad Club where we were introduced by

composer Marvin Hamlisch as we rode through the hotel ballroom! We have been
featured in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Dallas Morning News, all four
major local TV affiliates, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox Television. Our photos
have run in newspapers from San Antonio to the New York Post. The group is
not entirely about Elvis, though. We are first and formost, now and forever,

Mini Trail fanatics, just like you. We all were around them in the sixties,
and now we have them again. The Elvi thing is just a way to ride your Mini
Trail in front of  thousands of people at a time, anywhere you want.
Legally! We have ridden in restaurants in Austin, hotel hallways, country
clubs, botanical gardens, and had drag races in front of the Texas State
Capitol, all while the police watched us and laughed their heads off. You
cannot believe the reaction from people when they see us, whether it is

riding to a parade in a van, or riding the bikes to a parade, it is the most
fun you can imagine. We have decided to try to make this a huge group,
probably for this next July 4th, like around twenty or more Elvi. Loose
rules had only hardtail bikes, but practicality has us "allowing" all Mini
Trails in the 50cc size (like no CT 70's...sorry). The outfits? Rental

quality white Elvis jump suits and a BIG wig are musts. although Darrel
Byers just bought a belt made by Elvis's actual belt maker- it cost as much
as a cheap eBay wreck bike. We have our own special wig shop where the
ladies pile 'em up REAL HIGH. Lots of tacky jewelry look great. So if anyone
is interested, get 'em in touch with us, and we'll show them the time of
their lives........! Thanks, Paul
